Went to The Arcade Fire show last night. In a word - ROCK. By far the best show I've seen this year (and I even saw them this past summer too), and I'd even go so far to say, one the the best shows ever. I feel like I can say that after seeing Violent Femmes in 1990 in a bar in Lawrence, KS, Dave Matthews at Red Rocks, Radiohead, Sleater-Kinney, U2 ZooTV, just to name a few for authority.
It was like the London Philharmonic weeded out their 8 best people and sent them on tour. On stage at one time there was no less that 2 people playing violins, 1 person playing a cello, 2 people alternating between playing each other and a keyboard, a tambourine and a guitar. And there was French Horn. A French Frickin Horn!?!?!
If you haven't ever listened to their album Funeral do yourself a favor and buy it now, or take a listen here. They are on my CD list to the left. Sometimes I get jaded living in a music-centric city like Seattle, where Arcade Fire is old news, so maybe you guys haven't heard of them yet. They aren't "OC" status, that I know of, but it's only a matter of time, I'm sure. They are a 6-piece band (sometimes joined by 4 others) from Montreal. The husband and wife started the band and in the first year every member of the band had a family member die. You can imagine they have some emotion to release. They all play with this unparalleled enthusiasm that is so contagious. You would have thought last night was the last show they were ever going to play, ever. And, what made the show even better, it was a 25 and older crowd. Working men and women that have to get up and fully function at 7 a.m. the next day still love a good concert, and I love knowing that.
Things noticed at last night's show:
1. A baritone voice confessed at top volume, not once, not twice, but three times "I Love You Guys"
2. A lot of tall people like Arcade Fire. At 5'10, I'm no shorty, but I was on tip-toes the entire time (check out my calf muscles today)
3. No matter how old the concert goers, no one abides concert etiquette...don't fart in a crowd of people, okay?!?!
4. If you don't have an instrument to play and still want to be a part of the action, just play the air and keep singing. The snare drum player this.
I wish I had streaming video of this for everyone, but until blogging upgrades, do yourself a favor, go see the Arcade Fire when they are in your hood. You won't be disappointed!
